AI Is Changing the Threat Landscape. Is Your Business Ready?
An urgent message from your controller. A voicemail that sounds like your boss. A polished email asking for a payment change that looks cleaner than most legitimate messages in your inbox.
That is what makes this moment different. The threat is not just that attackers have new tools. It is that familiar scams are becoming faster to build, easier to personalize, and harder to spot. The FBI says AI changes the threat landscape by automating tasks that used to take more time and effort, while broader AI adoption also increases the attack surface businesses need to defend.[2]
The financial backdrop is not theoretical. The FBI said on April 6, 2026 that cyber-enabled crimes defrauded Americans of nearly $21 billion in 2025, and that artificial intelligence-related complaints were among the costliest categories highlighted in that report.[3] For a small or midsize business in Beaver Dam or the surrounding area, that means AI should no longer be treated as just a productivity story. It is also a security story.
How AI is changing the threat landscape for businesses
The first thing to understand is that AI is not replacing the old playbook. It is accelerating it. Phishing, impersonation, credential theft, and fraud are still the core risks. What has changed is the speed, polish, and scale attackers can bring to those same tactics.[1][9]
CrowdStrike reported that AI-enabled adversaries increased operations by 89% year over year, and the average eCrime breakout time fell to 29 minutes in 2025, with the fastest observed breakout happening in just 27 seconds.[1] That matters because it shrinks the margin for error. If a user clicks, approves, downloads, or shares something they should not, the window to detect and contain the problem may be much smaller than it used to be.
OpenAI’s February 2025 threat report points in the same direction. It describes malicious actors using AI across multiple stages of their operations, from research and translation to code debugging and content generation for scams and influence activity.[9] In plain terms, AI helps attackers work more like efficient businesses.
Microsoft’s 2024 Digital Defense Report adds another useful layer. It says customers face more than 600 million cybercriminal and nation-state attacks every day, and that over 99% of the 600 million daily identity attacks are password-based.[4] That does not mean every small business is facing a nation-state actor. It means the broader environment is crowded, automated, and identity-driven, which is exactly why smaller organizations cannot rely on “we are too small to be noticed” as a strategy.
Why impersonation risk now goes beyond email
For years, businesses were told to watch for phishing emails with bad spelling and obvious red flags. That advice is no longer enough. NIST now explicitly warns that AI can be used to craft increasingly convincing phishing attacks.[5] The problem is credibility.
Attackers can now generate messages that sound professional, match context, and imitate the tone people expect from coworkers, vendors, or clients. Microsoft also flags AI-enabled spear phishing and deepfakes as part of the emerging threat landscape.[4] So the risk is no longer confined to the inbox. It extends to text messages, job applications, fake profiles, voice calls, and social channels where trust can be abused.
Voice cloning is the clearest example. The FTC warns that voice cloning has become sophisticated enough that families and small businesses can be targeted with fraudulent extortion scams.[6] In a separate FTC announcement, the agency noted that scammers have used voice cloning to impersonate business executives in order to fraudulently obtain money or valuable information.[7]
That is a direct business risk, not a distant consumer issue. If your team is used to acting quickly on verbal approvals, last-minute payment changes, or urgent vendor requests, AI makes those workflows more dangerous. Professional services firms are especially exposed here because they often handle sensitive information, client funds, or time-sensitive approvals. That is one reason businesses with trust-heavy workflows should treat this as a priority, not a future concern.
Your own AI tools can become part of the attack surface
The other major shift is internal. Businesses are not just facing attackers who use AI. They are also adopting AI tools themselves, often quickly and informally. The FBI warns that as public and private sector AI adoption increases, the AI and machine learning attack surface increases too.[2]
This can show up in simple ways. Employees may paste sensitive information into external AI tools without clear rules. Teams may connect AI assistants to email, documents, or business systems without fully understanding the data exposure. New browser extensions, copilots, and integrations may gain access to more information than leadership realizes.
CrowdStrike’s 2026 report makes this concrete. It says adversaries injected malicious prompts into GenAI tools at more than 90 organizations and also exploited AI development platforms to establish persistence and deploy ransomware.[1] In other words, AI tools are not just something attackers use. They are now something attackers target.
This is where many SMBs get caught off guard. They may have a reasonable email filter, endpoint protection, and a backup solution, but no clear policy for AI use, no review of third-party AI permissions, and no process for deciding what data should never be entered into an AI tool. That gap matters because convenience tends to move faster than governance.
What business readiness looks like now
The good news is that readiness does not start with buying an expensive “AI security” product. For most businesses, it starts with tightening the basics that matter more in an AI-enabled environment.
NIST’s small business cybersecurity guidance remains practical and relevant here. It recommends phishing-resistant MFA where possible, tested backups, timely patching, strong passwords, and employee cybersecurity training.[8] Those controls are not outdated because AI exists. They are more important because AI increases the volume and believability of attacks that try to bypass them.
Identity controls: If Microsoft is seeing more than 99% of daily identity attacks tied to passwords, then password-only access is an obvious weak point.[4] Requiring MFA, especially on email, Microsoft 365, finance systems, and remote access, is one of the clearest moves a business can make.
Verification procedures: NIST’s phishing guidance says teams should verify urgent requests using known contact information or a public website, not the message itself.[5] That is one of the most important habit changes in an AI-heavy threat environment. If a request involves money, credentials, tax data, client records, or account changes, there should be a second channel verification step.
AI usage rules: Your business should decide which AI tools are approved, what data can be entered, who can connect AI tools to business systems, and when security review is required. This does not need to be a 40-page policy. It does need to be clear enough that employees are not making risky data-sharing decisions on the fly.
Operational discipline: Backups need to be protected and tested, not just present on paper.[8] Patching needs to happen on schedule. New software and integrations need review. Build a verification-first culture before an incident forces it
The biggest mistake businesses can make with AI-related risk is assuming the answer is purely technical. It is not. The FTC says the risks posed by voice cloning and related AI abuse cannot be addressed by technology alone.[6] That is the right mindset for SMB leaders.
Readiness is partly about tools, but it is also about culture. Your staff should feel comfortable slowing down an urgent request. Finance should have a documented verification path for payment changes. Leadership should expect sensitive requests to be confirmed, even if that creates a small delay. If someone hears a familiar voice, sees a familiar name, or gets a convincing message, the default response should be verification, not assumption.
This is especially important as businesses add AI into daily operations. Productivity gains are real, but they need to be matched with governance, access control, and better judgment around trust signals. Attackers are betting that businesses will adopt AI faster than they update their approval workflows. Too often, they are right.
The real question is not whether AI is changing the threat landscape. It already has. The better question is whether your business has updated its habits, controls, and decision-making to match that reality.
